Rack & pinion creaking

I've been hearing this bad creaking noise that's getting worse. It seems to come from the rack & pinion area, right where the outer tie rods meet, I checked ball joints and tie rod ends but no luck. Can this be fixed or greased, or am I due for a full replacement? My manual only talks about preload adjustments, so I am just trying to figure out if it's time to bite the bullet and swap the whole thing

If the ball joints and tie rod ends look good, the creaking sound might be comin from worn rack bushings. You could spray some silicoone lube on them for a quick fix, but if they're really bad, you'll need to replace them. Don't forget to check the inner tie rods and boots too,if they're dry or torn, that can cause issues as well. If nothing seems to help, you migth have to think about replacing the whole rack

Most likely internal wear. Since most racks are sealed and not serviceable, a worsening creak usually means its time for a replacement

Agree, it really does sound like it might be some internal wear. If it's sealed up and the noise is just getting louder, it's probably time for a replacement.

Hey, quick question for you, OP! Just out of curiosity, have you noticed any weird play in the steering or uneven assist along with that creaking? Oh, and does it happen more when you're going slow or when you're cranking the wheel all the way? Just trying to get a better picture here

@Clarry the rack and pinion assembly is bolted to the vehicle's subframe or chassis using rubber or polyurethane bushings
Over time, the rack mount bushings can wear, crack, or compress, allowing the rack to shift slightly and creak, especially when turning the wheel or going over bumps
This is a very common cause of creaking that seems to come from the steering area

If it's an internal wear like what others have been mentioning, I suggest a full replacement.
There's not really a simple fix or greasing solution for internal rack issues that cause that kind of persistent creaking.
It's probably time to budget for a new or remanufactured unit.

What? The lube didn't help? Then sorry mate but it could already damn well be worn internals or bushings. Do a rack swap sooner than later.

Thanks! I'll try hitting the rack bushings with silicone first and inspect the inner tie rods and boots closely. If that doesn't quiet it down, I guess I'll start pricing out a replacement

Yeah, I do feel a bit of extra play when turning slow or at full lock, especially when parking, steering still works, but the assist feels a little uneven lately too

That makes a lot of sense, mine's definitely creaking more over bumps and tight turns. I'll inspect those bushings closely; maybe it's not internal wear after all

Yeah, that's what I'm starting to think too. The lube didn't make a difference, so I'm probably looking at worn internals or bushings, it might be time to just bite the bullet
